COLONOSCOPY

A colonoscopy is a routine diagnostic examination that can look for abnormalities within the colon, remove polyps, acquire biopsy samples, and screen for colon cancer. Colonoscopies are a relatively simple procedure where a colonoscope, a flexible tube equipped with a camera, is inserted through the rectum and into the large intestine. A colonoscopy is the gold standard for colon cancer screenings, which is why Dr. Donald Balder proudly offers colonoscopies in Gulfport, MS at Mississippi Institute of Weight Loss & Gulf Coast Aesthetics. Schedule an appointment today to learn more about how a colonoscopy can safeguard your colon health.

When you arrive for your procedure, you will be placed under sedation. A thin, flexible colonoscope will be inserted into the rectum and advanced into the colon. The video camera attached to the scope will allow for visualization of the colon where any polyps or abnormalities can be detected. If necessary, polyps or biopsies may be taken during the procedure for further testing and diagnosis. Depending on the exam's findings, the procedure may take anywhere from 15 minutes to one hour to complete. After the procedure, you will remain in a recovery room while the sedation medication wears off.
