DS

A duodenal switch (DS) is a weight-loss procedure with two steps. The techniques used in the DS procedure are similar to those used in the gastric sleeve and gastric bypass. The first step of a duodenal switch will be the reduction of the stomach, similar to the sleeve gastrectomy, followed by a second step that will attach this new pouch to the last section of the small intestine. This combination of steps results in Gulfport, MS patients having elevated success in weight loss efforts compared to other procedures. Contact the Mississippi Institute of Weight Loss & Gulf Coast Aesthetics to request a consultation with Dr. Donald Balder to learn more about the duodenal switch procedure and determine if you are a good candidate.

What Should I Expect During A Duodenal Switch?

The duodenal switch is a laparoscopic procedure that uses both a restrictive and malabsorptive surgical technique to assist patients with losing a large amount of weight. During the first step of the procedure, approximately 70% of the stomach will be removed. In the second portion of the surgery, the small intestine is cut and connected directly below the newly formed stomach. This modification will redirect the flow of food and digestive juices, limiting the number of calories and nutrients absorbed by the body. The entire procedure will take approximately 2 hours.

It is normal to feel tenderness at the treatment site following the procedure. You will be prescribed pain medication to assist with the soreness you will experience. The discomfort should reside after about a week with full recovery typically taking 2 – 4 weeks. You will be given instructions regarding your bariatric diet and bariatric vitamin supplements to follow after the procedure; however, generally, like the other procedures, you can expect to be limited to liquids and then soft foods for the first month following surgery.
